Strong ACT contingent headed to Commonwealth Games

Athletics Australia has finalised their 109 member team for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games with 7 Athletics ACT athletes named and an additional 8 ACT based athletes selected.

Heading to her fourth Commonwealth Games, Lauren Wells is no stranger to the roar of a Commonwealth Games home crowd having competed at her first games as a 17 year old at the 2006 Melbourne edition in 400m Hurdles. Wells went on to finish 4th in both Delhi (2010) and Glasgow (2014) Games. At next month’s Games, Wells will not only compete in the 400m hurdles, but the Long Jump. Wells has not competed at an international level in the long jump since the 2007 World University Championships in Bangkok where she finished 6th.

“It’s almost a luxury to work with Lauren. Her ability to qualify for 2 individual events and also to be representing Australia at her 4th Commonwealth Games is testament to her resilience and skill” said Coach Matt Beckenham on Wells’ selection.

Beckenham will also have a busy game’s with Melissa Breen and Josh Clarke competing in the 100m and 4x100m events. Breen is off to her third Commonwealth Games, after being a semi-finalist in Delhi (2010) and Glasgow (2014) in the 100m. She will take a wealth of experience into these Games.

The ACT is well represented in the field events with Glasgow javelin bronze medallist Kelsey-Lee Roberts off to her second games. Roberts' coach and partner Mike Barber has had his work cut out over the past 6 months converting 2017 World Champion and World Record Holder in the F38 javelin Jayden Sawyer into a shot putter, work paying off with Sawyers selection for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the F38 shot put. The F38 shot put is expected to be dominated by ACT realtor Cameron Crombie who last year took out the F38 shot put at the 2017 World Para Championships in London.

In the distance events Chris Hamer will contest the marathon. Hamer shot up the rankings in 2017 with a 2.13.32 Marathon in Amsterdam which secured him selection for the Commonwealth Games. Hamer, originally from Victoria, relocated to Canberra to train under legendary distance coach Dick Telford. Telford will also have Athletics ACT board member James Nipperess contest the 3000m steeple chase at the Games. Nipperess will head to his second Commonwealth Games, having finished 9th in the steeple in Glasgow (2014).

In the middle distance events Keely Small gained selection in the 800m alongside Canberra based Brittany McGowan. McGowan, whose coached by Athletics ACT EO James Kaan and Melbourne Track Club's Nic Bideau, will compete in her second games. In Glasgow (2014) McGowan progressed through to the semi-finals in the 800m.

Canberra based wheelchair athletes Angela Ballard, Eliza Ault-Connell and Jake Lappin, all coached by Fred Periac will head to the Gold Coast to race the T54 1500m, with Lappin and Ault-Connell also selected in the T54 Marathon.
