Last weekend the National Cross Country and Winter Walking Championships were held on the Sunshine Coast. Athletics ACT fielded a relatively small number of competitors across the two events with the undoubted highlights being a Gold Medal to Mitchell Baker in the Race Walks and a Silver Medal to Keely Small in the Cross Country.

On Sunday 26 August, at the Lake Kawana course, Mitchell won Gold in the U18 10km event in a time of 46:36.72 just 18 seconds ahead of the Qld representative Nelson McCutcheon who stopped the clock in 46:54.86. "I was happy with the race, considering the conditions were a fair bit warmer and wetter than Canberra. I'm looking forward to Faulkner Park in December," noted Mitchell, referring to the next major national walking event, the 50m Race Walk and supporting events in Melbourne just prior to Christmas.

On the previous day almost 3000 people descended on the picturesque Maleny Golf Club on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland for the 2018 Australian Cross Country Championships where 28 races were contested by athletes from across Australia and overseas. Claiming the spoils in the premier Open races were Madeline Hills and Andy Buchanan.

In one of the most competitive races of the day Nikita Moore (Qld) was a surprise winner in the U18 4Km event running 14:40 to hold off Keely (14:55) by just 15 seconds. 83 competitors contested this race and the high quality field was highlighted by the fact that European U18 championships Silver medallist Sophie O'Sullivan finished 11th and our own ACT athlete and defending champion, Ruby White, finished 13th.
