On behalf of the Athletics ACT Board I would like to extend very warm wishes to all Athletes, Coaches, Officials, Volunteers and Administrators for a happy and relaxing festive season. If you’re travelling by road please drive safely and if you’re swimming, diving, fishing, etc, please take care!
2014 has been a busy year for ACT athletes with our elite able-bodied and para-athletes performing strongly at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and our younger members performing with distinction at both the Australian Junior Championships in Sydney earlier in the year and just recently at the Australian All Schools Championships in Adelaide.
While the departure of our joint AACT/LAACT Development/Participation Officer, Alex van der Meer Simo, in late September was disappointing we are excited about the recent recruitment of Mary Schumacher, the former CEO of Gymnastics ACT. Mary’s extensive experience in sports development, particularly with para-athletes, will ensure that the excellent work started by Alex will continue.
It would be extremely remiss of me to not recognize our hard-working band of Officials and Volunteers without whom our summer and winter track and field meets could not proceed…”thank you” for your wonderful contribution during 2014!
2015 promises to be an exciting year as we look forward to hosting our first National Tour Event on 7 February, the first to be held in Canberra since 2006. The very next day we will welcome the elite cross country runners from around Australia when we host the World Cross Country Selection Trials at Stromlo.
The new Woden Athletics Track is very close to completion with an official launch currently being planned for late January 2015. This new facility represents an exciting infrastructure development for the local athletics community in providing a second IAAF-standard synthetic track in the ACT.
Finally, I would like to extend my very best wishes to you all for a healthy and successful 2015.
